Super Falcons qualify for WAFCON 2022 quarter finals
After securing a 4-0 win over Burundi, the super falcons of Nigeria have proceeded to the quarter finals of the Women African cup of Nations (WAFCON) 2022.
The competition currently ongoing at Morocco since 2nd July, 2022 didn’t start too good for the super falcons of Nigeria. Having been placed in group C of the group stages along side South Africa, Botswana, and Burundi. Their opening match against south Africa ended in a 2-1 loss thereby almost dropping the morale of the ladies.
They however responded with high positive energy in the second fixture of the group stages against Botswana, beating them two goals to nill and keeping their hopes for qualifications alive. Qualifications to the quarter finals was sealed in today’s 4-0 victory against Burundi. This has made the Super falcons end the group stages as runners up of group C with six points while Banyana Banyana of South Africa lead the group with 9 points after a late goal from Majiya sealed their one nill win against Botswana.
Nigerians had fears and concerns when the point man of the super falcons, Asisat Oshoala was ruled out for the rest of the tournament. During the opening game of the tournament, Oshoala picked up an injury which means Nigeria will have to play the rest of the tournament without the Africa’s best female footballer. Recall that Asisat Oshoala has been capped Africa’s women player of the year for a record number of four times, equalling the record of her fellow Nigerian Perpetual Nwocha. She is no doubt one of the best in the continent when it comes to the game.
Nigeria is still fully active in the tournament and having a good game so far. Even in the absence of Asisat Oshoala, the Falcons have been able to come up with brilliant results in the attacking line with six goals in two games so far. It is definitely not a game over scenerio for the falcons as many thought it to be.
The African Women cup of Nations is no doubt a familiar name to the super falcons. They have lifted the trophy since it’s creation more than any other side. The super falcons have been the most successful team in the tournament having lifted the trophy for a record number of 11 times out of a possible 13. The only two tournaments which the super falcons failed to win were both won by Equatorial Guinea.
The competition started in 1991 and has since gone on to serve as qualifications for FIFA women’s world cup.
