Tinubu picks former Borno governor Kashim Shettima as running mate
It has been gathered that the flag bearer of All Progressive Congress (APC) for the forthcoming 2023 presidential general elections, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has confirmed his running mate for the race.
After much consultations and deliberations, Tinubu has decided to declare the former Borno state Governor, Kashim Shettima as his running mate for the 2023 presidential elections. This is obviously against the wish of many Nigerians, considering the fact that it has become a muslim-muslim ticket which many describe as religious bias.
Tinubu however reassured Nigerians when speaking after the Salah celebrations yesterday concerning his race, that he will ensure to be fair towards all.
This announcement of Kashim Shettima as APC presidential running mate, means Kabir Ibrahim Masari will have to step aside as the place holder. Recall that Kabir Masari who is a brother to Amino Bello Masari, the governor of Katsina state was chosen to serve as the place holder of the APC presidential running mate in order to beat the deadline stipulated by INEC for declaring running mates by political parties.
The announcement of Kabir Masari as place holder sparked negative reactions from the masses concerning the religion of both candidates. Although many thought that the reactions would yield a positive change when confirming the actual running mate later, it is however now obvious that Nigerians will have to face their fears since there is no change in the religion of the running mate either.
With this recent development, all contestants of the presidential elections has been fully confirmed by the three contending parties with are the Labour party (LP), All Progressive Congress (APC) and People’s Democratic party (PDP).
The people’s Democratic party already confirmed their presidential candidate to be Atiku Abubakar with Ifeanyi Okowa as his running mate. Labour party also confirmed Peter Obi as their president candidate with Datti Baba-Ahmed Yusuf as his running mate, and also All Progressive Congress has confirmed Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu as it’s presidential candidate and Kashim Shettima as his running mate.
After the return to democracy since 1999, the forth coming elections having produced three different competitive contestants, can easily be predicted to be the most competitive elections in Nigeria.
The question of ‘who will emerge victorious’ is still yet to be answered or even predictable but can you say Tinubu has made a mistake in picking a Muslim as his running mate? Will it have an effect on the votes of APC at the polls come 2023?. Let’s listen to your thoughts in the comment section below.
