“Only God will make me support Atiku for presidency” – Governor Ortom
The Benue State governor, His Excellency Dr. Samuel Ortom through an interview on Arise Television on the 29th of June 2022 expressed dissatisfaction on many issues going on in the country. These ranged from the issue of bandits and herdsmen invasion in the state and county, inability to pay salaries and also internal crisis within the People’s Democratic Party.
Governor Samuel Ortom who is a familiar name when it comes to airing out issues of national concerns boldly and without fear of contradictions stated his grieviances especially within his political party and also the acclaimed injustice done to his friend Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers state.
Below is a little excerpt from the interview on Arise News with Governor Ortom .
Reuben Abatti – will you support the presidential candidacy of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar?
Governor Ortom- I have gone into hibernation, I am praying to God to give me direction .
Wike was the one we rooted for the Presidential candidacy but Atiku came and grabbed it , even the VP slot 14 out of 17 of us voted for Wike but he resorted to Okwa.
Atiku hasn’t reached out to Wike or I . We need an explanation .
Tundun- does this spell doom for PDP in Rivers state?
Governor Ortom- *stylishly dodges the question*
He also said we must forget about APC and PDP to see how to rescues Nigeria. Nigeria is currently on drip.
Rufai – Sources in PDP says Atiku has been trying to reach out to Wike and he has refused to pick up their calls. He is on vacation in Turkey.
Governor Ortom – it is an insult to call Wike. They need to go to him! He is the pillar of PDP . He needed to be consulted before the announcement of the VP was made.
Recall that Governor Nyesom Wike had also contested for the presidential primaries coming second only to Atiku Abubakar with 237 votes against 371 votes. Although it was a fair win, many members of the party thought it wise and normal for Atiku Abubakar to reach out to Wike as a gesture of consolation for the loss. Considering his profile, value and sacrifices to the political party.
This interview has since thrown many concerned Nigerians into mixed reactions about the internal stability of the People’s Democratic party. But Governor Ortom has spoken clear enough, Atiku Abubakar does not have the backing of many top members of the party due to his neglect in recognizing Nyesom Wike’s value to the party.
And of course, this would be a cause of jubilation to many who are already against the political party and it’s candidature. Although 2023 is still a long way from now and many changes are bound to occur, we hope for a peaceful and credible elections ahead.
